The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway (L&YR) was a railway company that owned
and oportated most rail route across the north of England before it was merged in
1921 with the London North Western Railway (LNWR). The L&YR started out
as a transpenine link between the major industrial cities of the North - Manchester
and Leeds. It quickly spread across the the north absorbing smaller companies
including the Wakefield, Pontefract & Goole Railway (WP&GR).
