The English Lake District is the UK's largest national park. It takes up much
of the county of Cumbria in the North West of England. As the name suggests,
the area is home to many lakes both large and small from the biggest lake in the
UK, Lake Windermere, to smaller lakes like Coniston Water and Wast Water.
Interestingly Lake Windermere is the only lake called Lake... all of the others
are ... Water. The fantastic features of the area were carved out by glaciers
during the last ice age. As well as mountains and lakes the Lake District
also has a stretch of coastline includuing Whitehaven and Seascale home of the Sellafield
nuclear power station. The latter not particularly pictureque.
